WHY NATURAL DYES?

Our skin is our largest organ and everything that touches it gets absorbed.

Natural dyes are what humans have used forever to colour textiles. Synthetic dyes only took over from the mid-19th century, contributing to textile and fashion industry becoming one of the world’s most toxic and polluting industries.

My goal is to do my part — as thoughtfully as I can. To slow down. To feel good an at peace in the world I create around myself. To say no to toxic dyes, synthetic fibers, and microplastics released in my washing mashine. Yes to natural fibers (especially wool), natural colors, meanings and change. Yes to a thriving garden, friends and genuine connections.
I truly hope to find like-minded people — those who share these values, would like to have a naturally dyed wardrobe, and build a deep, real relationship with Nature and each other.

  • From eco-printing and natural dyeing to indigo vats and shibori folds, dye pastes, mordant pastes, silkscreening, block printing and freehand painting — my practice is rooted in the full spectrum of natural colour.

I also make lake pigments, turning them into watercolours, oil paints, pastels, and crayons.
I'm always learning, always growing — curiosity drives everything I do. And one day soon, I hope to teach it all — through online courses, made for you.

  • The process of natural dyeing asks for patience and slowing down to allow the fibers to pull color from the plants and the dye baths.

Natural dyes are alive — unpredictable, sometimes uneven, always evolving. That's what makes the process magical (and occasionally stressful :)), endlessly unique, and completely addictive.

  • My aim is to keep every step — dyeing and sewing alike — as natural as possible.

I work exclusively with natural, cellulose-or protein-based fibers like wool, silk, linen and cotton, sewn with organic cotton thread.

Every product is almost fully compostable.

And growing quietly alongside it all — a little dye garden, getting bigger every year.

Hi, I'm Ildikó

ARTIST · NATURAL DYER · TEACHER · MOM OF TWO

Born in 1985, based in Slovakia. I studied Fashion Design at SPŠO Trenčín (now ŠUP Trenčín) and Painting at the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, University of Pécs, Hungary.

In the summer of 2014, I first discovered natural dyeing through the books of renowned Hungarian natural dyer Kemendi Ágnes — and decided to experiment at a Land Art Symposium in Transylvania. I was immediately hooked. It became part of my artwork, shifting my practice from painting toward three-dimensional objects. That was my final semester of doctoral studies.

A few months later, I moved back to Slovakia after nearly a decade in Hungary, and began teaching in art schools. The fascination with transferring colour from plants and insects to fibres has never left me.

In February 2018, I founded DOT 'N' POT. In 2022–23, my studio was built. After a few years of maternity leave — during which I never truly stopped dyeing or creating — I'm officially bringing my passion back to life in Spring 2026.

Thank you for being here. ♡
